The Ultimate Guide to Children’s Jewelry Sizing

Buying jewelry for children is about more than beauty—it’s about fit and comfort. Earrings that are too large or necklaces that are the wrong length can be uncomfortable, and a piece that doesn’t fit is a piece she won’t wear. That’s why we’ve created this guide to children’s jewelry sizing, with simple recommendations for every age, from newborns to teens.

Earring Sizes by Age

Every Hearts & Halos stud sits on a 7mm post, a length designed for children’s earlobes, with a wide screw back that sits flat and comfortable. The main choice is the size of the stud itself:

  • Babies & Toddlers – 3mm: Petite and proportionate on tiny ears, and comfortable during naps. Browse baby earrings.
  • Young Children – 4mm: Our most popular size. Big enough to sparkle, small enough for everyday wear. Our birthstone earrings come in 4mm.
  • Older Kids, Tweens & Teens – 5mm: A slightly bolder look that still feels refined. Shop teen earrings.

Shaped designs like hearts, flowers, and stars vary slightly in size, so watch the in-hand video on each product page to see the true size before you buy. Our snap-close huggie hoops sit close to the earlobe and suit all ages.

Necklace Lengths by Age

Our children’s necklaces come in three lengths:

Necklace Length Recommended Age
12–14 inches 0–7 years
14–16 inches (most popular) 5–15 years
16–18 inches 8–16+ years

Each necklace has an extendable chain with end rings spaced one inch apart, so you can adjust the length anywhere between the minimum and maximum as your child grows. See our full Necklace Size Guide for photos and fit tips.

How to Measure

Wrap a soft measuring tape or a piece of string loosely around your child’s neck where the necklace will sit, then measure the string. Add about two inches for a comfortable fit. If the result falls between sizes, choose the longer length and use the extender rings to shorten it.

Pendant Sizes

Our engravable heart and round pendants come in two sizes: Baby pendants are scaled for infants and toddlers, while Classic pendants suit school-age children and teens. Browse baby necklaces, kids necklaces, and teen necklaces.

Choosing a Size for a Gift

Not sure of the child’s size? These choices fit the widest range of ages:

  • Earrings: 4mm studs, or 3mm for a baby.
  • Necklaces: 14–16 inches, our most popular length, which adjusts as she grows.

Because engraved pieces are made just for your child and are final sale, double-check the length before you order.

Safety & Comfort

Proper sizing is part of keeping children safe. Choose small, lightweight earrings that won’t tug on earlobes, and remember that babies and young children should wear necklaces only under adult supervision and never while sleeping.
